Today, a new essay, "Nova Scotia," under "Essays" in the website.

And a 'thank you' to Claudia for the suggestion for a link to tell people of a new entry in the blog. I will do that as soon as my resident expert, my wife, takes the time to show me how. Claudia is a published novelist with her own website, Humoring the Goddess, which is well worth the read. FK

Richard Proenneke's filmed and documented his one year solo life in Lake Clark National Park, Alleutian Peninsula, Alaska. "Alone in the Wilderness" has been featured as a PBS documentary several times in recent years. It is a fascinating account of one man's account of survival against the elements. With basic tools he builds a cabin, hunts, fishes, and survives an entire year in the Alaskan Wilderness. I have watched his fascinating account many times and am always caught up in the romance of it all. The stark beauty that is Alaska. The harshness of nature, the "man against the elements" theme. Oh to be Richard for just one year. What a great adventure it would be. Richard does ask the ultimate question. "Could I really enjoy my own company for an entire year?" Would one be happy retiring on a rain driven part of Nova Scotia or would the Gin and Tonic life around the pool in Florida be a better way to wile away ones retirement years? In my younger days I would have chosen Nova Scotia in a New York minute. Today however? I have discovered that the need for conversation, to discuss ideas or thoughts with others is becoming a greater need in my life. Maybe at one time, a year of isolation would have been just the ticket. Today however, I too would seek out the council of the single family in the single tent, on an isolated campground, somewhere in Nova Scotia.

I personally don't think I could stand my company only for that period of time. The whining would become unbearable after a few weeks! Plus you are right, Cal -- I'd want to share all my ups and downs with someone else.
