What an excellent topic for an essay. A rainy day always brings back memories. Fishing with my father comes to mind. I was maybe 10 or 11 years old. We were out on Sand Lake near Hayward Wisconsin sometime in June in a little wooden rowboat that came with the cabin we rented. The Perch were biting and the sun was shining. A small cloud passed overhead and suddenly the rain started coming down in buckets. The sun continued to shine, the rain continued, and the Perch stopped biting. Then, as if by magic, we started catching Bass. By the time the rain passed we had 5 keeper Bass in the boat. Why do I remember this so clearly? Many years later as my father lay dying in a hospital bed, as I held his hand, tears in my eyes, knowing the end was coming soon, he recalled that day. A memory long buried, a time shared with my father, rain coming down; on a sunny day.

That Essay, Fred - now that is your true calling! Excellent stuff and very worthy of a Book that I would read!

I first great rain experience may seem silly in comparison. I remember sitting on the veranda, in a wicker chair, at the ripe old age of 8 years. Obviously not doing much but possibly ruminating on toy plastic army men, it started to rain! The temperature had dropped and it downright poured - and I thought...."Cool"! It was overcast and dark with no one around - funny, for me as an 8 yeard old, the solitude was spellbinding! I loved it!!

Ever since, rain and severe snowstorms have held a fascination for me....I think it is all part of being misanthropic...and I love it!!
